University silences Christian views
Universities are supposed to be places of learning, based on a free exchange of ideas.
But a recent incident at a Victorian university shows how quickly and effectively certain ideas can be shut down and dissenters punished.
Even worse is that in this case the “unwelcome” ideas were expressions of orthodox, historical Christianity and the Christian worldview.
Here’s what happened:
This year, Ryan Lee (name changed for privacy) was a student at a university in Victoria, living on campus in university accommodation. He had an agreement to continue these living arrangements in 2026.
However through the year he had conversations with fellow residents about his Christian point of view, which clashed with those of fellow students.
On one occasion he declined an invitation to see a play, and when asked why he explained its themes on sexuality did not align with his Christian beliefs.
On another he was pressed on his views on abortion and explained that, as a Christian, he was opposed.
As a result of these conversations, a complaint was made by a fellow student and the university ruled that Ryan had breached the code of conduct.
His lease for 2026 was terminated due to this breach.
Ryan came to HRLA to assist with lodging an appeal, which was ultimately dismissed.
This case is a clear example of the way Codes of Conduct can be used by universities and other institutions to silence certain viewpoints, particularly religious ones. Too often they are used to enforce conformity and to punish alternative opinions.
Despite claiming to be about pursuing knowledge and truth, the university refused to defend open conversations about contentious ideas.
People like Jereth Kok and Matthew Squires have lost their livelihood for expressing their faith and students like Ryan and former HRLA client Andrew have faced hostility at university.
HRLA will continue to defend the right of people of faith in education and the workplace to share their faith and speak the truth.
Ryan has since found alternative accommodation, and for now has decided to focus on his studies rather than pursue the matter further. But HRLA will continue to stand with Christians like Ryan who speak courageously and with conviction.
