Jillian facing further action for speaking up
Child psychiatrist Dr Jillian Spencer has faced further pressure from her employer after being sent a letter saying it is not appropriate for her to return to “any workplace” in the system.
Dr Spencer was stood down from her work at the Queensland Children’s Hospital for speaking out against the increasingly disputed “gender affirming” model of treatment for gender confused children and adolescents.
The letter from the hospital’s director of clinical services comes after Dr Spencer told a NSW Parliament forum that she was suspended for speaking out against gender activism she believed was inappropriate.
“I hold significant concerns regarding your ability to work with any other colleagues or any other office within the Hospital Health Service when considering the allegations against you,” the director wrote in the letter to Dr Spencer.
“Taking this into consideration, at this time, I am not satisfied that it is appropriate for you to return to any workplace.”.
Dr Spencer said that she had already been subjected to three other “show cause” letters from the hospital for speaking out against transgender treatment for children, including puberty blockers, the effects of which are irreversible.
“I was stood-down in April 2023 after I raised concerns with my bosses about what I was seeing clinically, which was the gender transition of troubled and confused children with puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones,” she said.
“I discovered there was no evidence of mental health benefit from these interventions, and really serious long-term harms like infertility, lack of sexual function and physical health problems.
“Since then, the hospital has sent me four separate ‘show cause’ accusing me of breaching the code of conduct.”
The latest action by the Queensland health service relates to Dr Spencer speaking about the number of LGBTQI+ pride events held in the hospital.
“They’re trying to fire me for speaking up to protect children,” she told Sky News Australia.
“I have a broader and much more serious message for the hospital, which is, you are harming all of us when you stop doctors from speaking up about the harms that you’re seeing being done to patients,” she fired back.
“You are breaching the community’s trust. And with what you are doing to me, you are breaking my heart.”
This action from the Hospital comes despite the Queensland government pausing the use of puberty blockers for children pending a review, a move which Dr Spencer said made her feel “vindicated”.
